Translated from Viva Chiclana by Victoria Atherton
The stretch of coast in Chiclana known as the 'Loma del Puerco' and the watchtower along it bore witness last week to the unveiling of a plaque commemorating the Battle of Chiclana. Present at the unveiling of the plaque was the mayor of Chiclana, José María Román, and his Conil counterpart Antonio Roldán.
A handful of representatives from hotels in nearby Novo Sancti Petri also attended the event along with members of the Economic and Social council of Chiclana
The text of the plaque contains two fundamental references and is written in English, French and Spanish as these were the nationalities of the majority of those who took part in the battle. Firstly the plaque includes a reference to the watchtowers which used to occupy the whole of the Atlantic coast of Andalucía, as well as part of the Mediterranean coast. It must be remembered that amongst these watchtowers was the Torre del Puerco itself and the Torre Bermeja both of which are situated at opposite ends of Barrosa beach.
The text of the plaque also places special emphasis on the actual Battle of Chiclana which took place on this particular stretch of Chiclana coastline on March 5 1811. The following is written on the plaque: ' The Torre del Puerco is an example of the watchtowers which were erected in the Middle Ages and served as a lookout and defence post.
Given its exceptionally good location this tower witnessed firsthand the Battle of Chiclana which saw Allied troops - namely Spanish and Anglo-Portuguese - fight against the French army. Chiclana de la Frontera. Bicentenary of the Battle of Chiclana.' Visitors to the new plaque will be afforded a view of not only the watchtower and the scene of the battle itself but also of Sancti Petri castle.
