This year ChiFRA has tried to focus its efforts on some of the major issues that concern our membership, including; Integration, Age Concern, Electricity, and the "AGB". Here is a brief update:
Integration & Spanish Classes: The Spanish classes held at the "Centro del Dia de Mayores" were a great success, not only for those of you who have improved your Spanish, but also for some of our Spanish neighbours who are now starting to notice that we are not all tourists, or indifferent colonist, resigned to living in small English speaking communities; but fellow citizens who take a genuine interest in their language and culture.
Holding the language classes in a social centre frequented by the "Locals" has allowed us to "rub shoulders" and start to break down barriers and misconceptions. For many, this has brought the realization that we (like them) are not all as rich or comfortable as they were lead to believe; surviving on a limited pensions, or working hard to earn a living. We hope to restart our Spanish language classes in September.
This and other ChiFRA activities, including our participation in the "Battle of Chiclana" events, are paying back dividends and opening new doors. One of which is, that for the first time in the 25 years of its history "Radio Chiclana 101,7FM" are now broadcasting in English. ChiFRA are "ON AIR" once a week on Monday afternoons at 5.30pm with a run down on the "Local" and ChiFRA news. This is a free slot, donated to ChiFRA and the ex-pat community by the Chiclana Council and Radio Chiclana. Many thanks to Rocío Oliva (Director) Guillermo Ortiz (Presenter) and Alfonso (Sound) for their help.
Age Concern: ChiFRA has been helping the Chiclana Age Concern project to facilitate locations and organize events. - After holding several successful meetings at places like the "Casa de la Cultura", the Church in "Novo Sancti Petri" and the "Centro del Dia de Mayores", it looks like the project is finally getting off the ground. Several people have stepped up to the challenge and we will continue to help and support them for as long as it takes! Anyone interested can contact Yvonne Ferrier at
Electricity, and the "AGB": ChiFRA have been working very hard in the background, trying to negotiate lower prices for those who are inside the plan, supporting things like the 60€ per month method of payment and the restitution of electricity for those households outside of the plan. Most of these negotiations are ongoing and information will be posted on our Web page as and when we have it. We are hoping to report several breakthroughs in the near future.
ChiFRA is a voluntary association and relies on you, the members, to take part in our activities and give us your ideas. Please keep an eye on our website as it constantly changing and new articles are regularly added.
The ChiFRA web site is now one of the most read, English speaking, local sites. If you are interested in sponsoring a link, or know of anyone who may be, please contact us at
Membership is rapidly increasing and compared to 2009, has already trebled in the first four months of this year.
We are constantly trying to improve and are looking into ways in which to invite even more people to join us. One of which is a complete rethink about our future events and how we can reach out to more people, including events that we can share with our fellow "Chiclaneros" and fund raisers for local charities. If you have some spare time and would be prepared to help out, please contact us.
