Tarjeta Dorada

If you are thinking of visiting a city or somewhere a reasonable distance away, it is worth considering using the train especially if you are over 60 years of age. Renfe, the Spanish rail network, issue a discount card called a Tarjeta Dorada.

This card gives up to  40% discount on fares as follows:-

Alta Velocidad  long distance

  • Over 60s, over 18s on benefit for physical/psychological incapacity and registered disabled of over 65% disability. For this last group the card will be marked ‘y acompanante’ for an accompanying person to have the same discount.
  • Tickets bought for journeys on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 40% discount. Tickets bought in advance with reservations for journeys on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, 40% discount. Tickets bought for journeys on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, 25% discount.

Media Distancia medium distance
  • Over 60s, registered disabled.
  • All trains, days and routes, 40% discount.

Cercanias local trains
  • Over 60s, registered disabled.
  • A right to a reduction of 40%.

To obtain the card just go to a station (we went to Bahia Sur) with your passport and ask for a ‘Tarjeta Dorada’, this costs 5 euros and lasts for one year. Even if you only use the card once a year, it should show a saving above its cost. We went to Cordoba by train last year and it was much less hassle than driving, happy traveling!
