"A Mockery of Democracy" written by Román Orozco for El Pais 15.07.10
Translated by Vicky Atherton
The world has turned upside-down: a group of residents has created a political party with the aim of legalising the infractions of planning laws which they themselves have committed.
Political parties should be used as a way to defend the common good, not the interests of a select few, much less so if these interests are of a criminal nature. Yet this seems to be what has happened in the town of Chiclana (Cádiz), where, in a population of approximately 80,000 inhabitants, some 15,000 houses are recognised as illegal.

Tuesday 27 April saw the publication of the controversial plan to legalise homes in and around the town of Chiclana. There are thought to be some 15,000 illegal houses in the area. From now on residents of the town who wish to do so can begin a process which will see them able to benefit from basic services such as mains drainage and drinking water and a sewerage system.
